Fun Thanksgiving
Activities & Traditions
Thanksgiving is more than the beginning of Christmas.... In the USA, Thanksgiving is felt to be a warm, family holiday, and folks travel all over the country to eat this big meal with their families. Thanksgiving commemorates a feast held in 1621 by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians. Folks can never really agree what foods were actually served at this feast, so most Americans just stick to the traditional dishes that they grew up with.
That's what its all about, spending time with loved ones, being thankful for family, and all the things we have."Thanksgiving Day"... In 1939 U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt shifted the day of Thanksgiving from the last Thursday in November to one week earlier. Retail merchants had petitioned the president to make the change to allow for an extra week of shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many Americans objected to the change in their holiday customs and continued to celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of the month. Roosevelt’s political opponents in Congress also opposed the break with tradition and dubbed the early holiday “Franksgiving.” In May 1941 Roosevelt admitted that he had made a mistake and signed a bill that established the fourth Thursday of November as the national Thanksgiving holiday, which it has been ever since.

Pumpkin Bowling
Some folks watch football, but my family was always looking for something more fun to do after our huge Thanksgiving feast. My parents live across the street from my elementary school, and one year we decided to roll whole pumpkins down the school's sidewalk toward six or seven bottles of water!!
Pumpkin Bowling was born!
If you have leftover pumpkins, not the rotten kind, but kind that have been decorative around the house, this is a fun activity for all ages. We used gallon jugs one year, half full of water, and we used 2 litre bottles another year, also half full. The gallon jugs were harder to knock over!
We don't have any rules, we just take turns rolling the pumpkins until the pumpkins are broken, or we get too cold!! We've played it almost every year, and we have lots of fun.

Special Thanksgiving Traditions
Traditions Sent in by Nice Readers: Every year, in addition to our family, we seem to adopt someone who joins us if they do not have somewhere to go.
It is always such a blessing to share with others.
I love to keep family traditions, so, i had started my own a few years ago by starting a Thanksgiving album with black pages and took pictures of our thanksgiving day.We use a silver or gold pen. I pass the book around to each person so they can share what they are thankful for that year.
It is fun to look back from the years previous and to see who we had for dinner and remember the fun memories!
Happy Thanksgiving!

As we sit around the table saying the blessing, we each hold a piece of dried popcorn kernel. When it is your turn you say what you were thankful for from last year and put your kernel your tiny basket (one is at each place setting).
My dad always read a scripture after that. We always make a homemade placecard and paper basket for each place setting, different from the year before. Each year, as we get craftier they get nicer and nicer.A look at some eclectic local Thanksgiving traditions

TRUE STORIES FROM THE BUTTERBALL Turkey Hotline
...where people call to get advice how to cook a Turkey from the experts
*Thanksgiving Dinner on the run. A woman calledto find out how long it would take to roast her turkey. To answer the question, the Talk-Line home economist asked how much the bird weighed. The woman responded, "I don't know, it's still running around outside."
* Tofu turkey? No matter how you slice it, Thanksgiving just isn't Thanksgiving without turkey. A restaurant owner in California wanted to know how to roast a turkey for a vegetarian menu
* Then there's the time a lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."
