About five years earlier, we had tried to show "Hillbillys in a Haunted House" on DumpTV and turned it off after 40 minutes, and played some other shorter film instead--the only time we ever did that.
We can't even begin to tell you how stupid this movie is; it's a spy movie old dark house kinda thing that mutates into country music theater every now and then. Incredible!
The stars are Ferlin Husky, Joi Lansing and Don Bowman as three country entertainers on their way to Nashville for a Country Jambouree.
They get side tracked at an old house along the way and run smack-dab in into Basil Rathbone, John Carradine and Lon Chaney,Jr. (who aappears to be about as drunk as Husky obviously was.)
Jean Yarbrough directs as though he was still in the middle of one of the many Abbott & Costello films he did back in the '40s. But "Hillbillies..." is worse than anything that came out of those days. In fact, it's hard to believe a film this clumsily made could have come out of the '60s---1967, to be exact.
But a miracle happened and this stinker appeared, in all it's inept glory. The country music, that dominates throughout the film, is as cheesy as it is hillarious. Merle Haggard is even in the damn thing. No foolin'.
And my old pal Richard Webb pops up as a secret agent; you'll remember him as TV's "Captain Midnight." Dick even wore the old khaki suits als the Captain up until the last days we all saw him before he died. He was a wonderful guy and was always as friendly as can be.
Country music fans will have the edge on most viewers of episode,
but bad movie fanatics will have the last laugh.
